Pau Hana Background

Short version:

The first pau hana.  Itchin' to get out, Dave called 10 people he knew and asked everyone to bring a bunch of friends to Tied House in Mountain View for a "pau hana" Friday night.  Scott Unten rounded up about 7 IBMers, Adrienne Ganiko had about a dozen of her closest friends in tow.  There were about 35 "ex pats" split between the patio outside and a large table inside.   There has been a pau hana just about every month since.  I believe this was at the end of '99 or early 2000.

Long version:

New to the Bay Area in mid '99, I felt "unconnected".  As we all know too well, in Hawaii, everyone knows everyone.  Chris Chen and I had dinner one night in Palo Alto, sharing the same view -  we both wanted to start building up our network.

Scott Unten invited me to Loida, Joy and Maile's annual picnic at Lick Mill Park.  Chris and Jeff Chung came, beer in hand.  It was great hanging out with  local (Hawaii) people.   I'm wondering, would this gang like to get together for pau hana, like we did back at Sprint Hawaii?

About a month later, Chris, Jeff, Adrienne and I hustled to meet after work and car pool up to a HCCNC mixer in Berkley.   The food was not bad, but the company was great.  On the long drive back through San Francisco and on the 280, we all agreed that we needed to have events with Hawaii people, more often, and closer to where we lived.

A few months later, suffering from beer withdrawal, I unknowingly called the first prototype Bay Area Pau Hana to order (see short version above).

Every month after that, we visited various establishments up and down 101 - Gordon Beirsch (San Jose, following UH Hoops Vs. San Jose), Tied House (San Jose, Ivy can't find us - she was in Mountain View), Blue Chalk (Palo Alto, arrival of Lori Young, and the first time "Virtual Chris" attended an event),   F&A (Palo Alto, multiple), Dave and Buster's (Milpitas, Eric and Nelwyn's Where's Kimo? a hit), Jillian's (San Francisco, multiple), and piggy backing on HCNCC, the UH Fresno Tailgate.
